Corrugated culverts, a new type of flexible structural pipe, are widely used in highway and railway subgrade drainage and small bridge projects. Made from thin steel plates pressed into a corrugated shape, they feature light weight, easy installation, and strong adaptability to foundation deformation. This article focuses on the construction methods and key technical points of corrugated culverts.
During the construction preparation phase, pipe quality must be strictly inspected to ensure the integrity of the corrugation shape and uniform wall thickness. The culvert axis and foundation elevation must be verified according to the design drawings. The foundation should be flat and dense, typically using a gravel cushion or concrete foundation, the thickness of which must meet design requirements to ensure uniform stress distribution throughout the pipe.
Segment installation is a key step. Corrugated culvert segments are precisely aligned using lifting equipment. Longitudinal connections are secured with bolts, and joints should be sealed with sealant to prevent leakage. During installation, the axis of the segments must be kept straight, and the height difference between adjacent segments must be within the permitted range (usually ≤5mm). For long-span culverts, temporary supports are required to prevent deformation and should be gradually removed after the fill reaches a certain height.
Backfill operations directly impact structural stability. Backfill should be applied symmetrically in layers on both sides of the culvert bottom, with each layer no thicker than 20 cm. Permeable gravel is preferred, and compaction should be performed using a small compactor to prevent impact loads from damaging the pipe wall. Heavy machinery is strictly prohibited from passing through the top of the culvert when the fill height is less than 0.5 m.
Quality control should focus on monitoring pipe deformation and joint sealing. After construction, a water-tightness test should be conducted to ensure no leakage, and foundation settlement should be monitored regularly. The proper use of corrugated culverts can significantly improve the durability of the project, and standardized implementation of construction techniques is key to ensuring structural safety.
